Sansevieria Black Coral is a snake plant native to West Africa. In Africa, you can see this snake plant growing along roadsides, under hot and arid conditions. That’s what made her loveable by succulent lovers! She doesn’t need too much care and in return, she will make your home or garden more alive and natural!
Sansevieria Black Coral Physical Characteristics

Sansevieria Black Coral has long, sword-shaped, dark green leaves known for their tiger-striped patterns. The stripes are vertical and usually have various shades of green color.
You will see small, greenish-white flowers after couple of years, but that might not be the case. This sansevieria usually doesn’t bloom but, if she is grown outside where she may get natural sunlight, her chances of flowering might get better.
This snake plant will need couple of years to reach her maximum height which ranges between 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120 cm).

Sansevieria Black Coral Care
Sunlight: Like every Sansevieria, Black Coral needs bright, indirect sunlight to thrive. About 6 hours of filtered sunlight every day should make this plant show its beautiful green shades. Direct sun is not a problem too, but avoid it during afternoon.
Temperature: Black Coral prefers warm temperatures. Room temperature ranging from 60-75°F(15-24°C) is ideal for snake plants. However, temperatures below 50°F(10°C) can be dangerous.
Water: Black Coral likes to be watered when its soil gets dry. Make sure to check if soil is dry before you water it. This way, you’ll make sure this snake plant gets enough water and doesn’t get overwatered.
Soil: Cactus or succulent potting mix is perfect for Sansevieria Black Coral. It drains well, making sure your snake plant won’t suffer from root rot and other diseases.
Fertilizer: This snake plant is a succulent after all, so it doesn’t need to be fertilized often. Use succulent fertilizer and dilute it with water before applying it. Its best to use it occasionally, every 4-6 weeks during active growing season(spring and summer) only.
Sansevieria Black Coral Growth
Don’t let Sansevieria Black Coral stay in a pot it outgrown, repot it instead and let her continue to grow! Here’s how to repot her:
- Remove Sansevieria Black Coral from her current pot
- Examine her roots – trim damaged or dead roots
- Fill new, bigger pot with well-draining soil
- Plant your sansevieria in the middle of new pot
Snake plants need a couple of days to recover from stress after they’ve been repotted. Light amounts of water and filtered sunlight will help the recover.
Remove any yellow or damaged leaves by cutting them at the base. Also, prune healthy, overgrown leaves if you want to control the size of your snake plant. Best time to prune snake plant is during their active growing season.
Pruned leaves can be used for propagation. Cut the leaf into pieces. Let the pieces dry for 1-2 days before planting them in well-draining soil. Aside from leaf propagation, you can use division for multiplying this snake plant. Simply divide underground stems(rhizomes) into sections(every section should have leaves and roots). Plant each section in well-draining soil.
